The Umari mosque is the largest and one of the oldest mosques of Akhmim, and its foundation is attributed to the time of the conquest. Akhmim is the birthplace of the great saint Dhul-Nun al-Misri. The mosque stands in the old centre of the town on the east bank of the Nile opposite Sohag.
