The Hajji Sinan Zawiya, known locally as Hadži Sinanova tekija, stands in the Sagrdžije quarter on the slope above Baščaršija. It was built in the seventeenth century through the endowment of Silahdar Mustafa Pasha, a vizier of Sultan Murad IV, and became the leading centre of the Qadiri order in Bosnia. It has remained in use without a break ever since. Behind its walls lie a courtyard, the hall where gatherings of remembrance (dhikr) are held, and the graves of shaykhs who led the community over the centuries. Gatherings still take place on set evenings each week. The zawiya also trained many scholars and poets, and it is one of the best-preserved buildings of its kind in the Balkans.
