The White Masjid stands on Vratnik, the old walled quarter above Sarajevo, beside the former Jajce barracks. It was founded together with a mekteb by Hajji Hajdar, a scribe of the divan who prospered in the service of Gazi Husrev Bey. He passed away in 1545 on his way back from the Hajj and is buried in a turbe in the mosque's courtyard. The mosque has a slender stone minaret, and a fountain fed from a stone reservoir was added along the courtyard in 1815. It was shelled during the war of 1992-95 and later thoroughly restored, and together with its mekteb, fountain and turbe it was declared a national monument in 2015. The Yellow Fortress is a short walk away.
