Zanbal is the historic cemetery of Tarim and one of the most visited burial grounds in Hadramawt. Generations of the Ba-Alawi sayyids and the scholars of Tarim are buried here, among them Sayyid Muhammad ibn Ali, known as al-Faqih al-Muqaddam (d. 653 AH), Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf, Abdullah al-Aydarus al-Akbar and Imam Abdullah ibn Alawi al-Haddad, the author of the Ratib al-Haddad. The cemetery is a field of simple whitewashed graves, with low domed and roofed enclosures over the graves of the best-known figures, many of them with carved wooden covers. The neighbouring cemeteries of al-Furayt and Akdar adjoin it, and visitors to Tarim usually come here as part of the town's round of visitations, often early in the morning.
