Old Marib stands on the mound of the ancient Sabaean capital, the centre of the kingdom of Saba for more than a thousand years. Its later mud-brick tower houses were built on top of the ancient ruins, reusing carved stones and inscriptions. The old town is now largely abandoned, its towers standing over the plain, and it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba.
