Abd al-Razzaq ibn Hammam al-San'ani (126–211 AH) was one of the great hadith masters of the second Islamic century. He studied under Ma'mar ibn Rashid, Ibn Jurayj and Sufyan al-Thawri, and scholars travelled from across the Muslim world to hear from him in Sana'a, among them Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Yahya ibn Ma'in. His Musannaf, one of the earliest surviving collections of hadith and the reports of the Companions, is still studied today. His grave lies on a rocky hillside outside Sana'a, marked by an inscribed stone tablet that names him, with a small mosque associated with him nearby. It is a quiet spot with wide views over the surrounding valleys and is visited by students of hadith who come to honour him.
