The ancient Marib Dam was one of the great engineering works of the ancient world, built by the Sabaeans to water the fields around their capital. It was maintained and rebuilt for more than a thousand years, and its final breaking is remembered in the Qur'an in the story of Saba. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba. Massive stone sluice structures survive at either end of the old dam across Wadi Dhana, west of Marib, and a modern dam has been built upstream.
