The Main Pass is the historic land gate of Aden, the route through the volcanic ridge of Jabal al-Ta'kar that linked Crater, the old walled town, with the rest of Aden. It was also known as Bab al-Barr, the Land Gate, and as Bab Aden. The pass is still the road from Crater towards al-Mualla, and the remains of the old fortifications can be seen on the rocks on either side.
