Zabid was founded in the early ninth century and was the capital of Yemen from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. For hundreds of years it was one of the great centres of Islamic learning, with a university and dozens of mosques and madrasas that drew students from across the Muslim world. It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The historic city keeps its old street plan, brick houses with decorated plaster facades, the Great Mosque and the Asha'ir Mosque, and the citadel on its eastern side.
