The Great Mosque of Zabid is one of the largest historic mosques in Yemen and was for centuries the centre of the teaching for which Zabid was famous across the Muslim world. It is built of brick and lime, with timber laid in the walls, and its ceilings use teak and other woods brought from India. The mosque is almost square, holds around 3,500 worshippers, and has an open courtyard surrounded by arcades, eight domes and a tall brick minaret. It stands in the al-Jami' quarter of the historic city, close to the road to al-Tuhayta.
