The Great Mosque of Kamaran was built in 1515 by Husayn al-Kurdi, the commander of the Mamluk fleet sent to the Red Sea, who fortified the island. It is the main historic monument of Kamaran, the largest Yemeni island in the Red Sea. The mosque has a prayer hall covered by rows of small white domes and a minaret, and stands near the old harbour of the island.
