The Haraz mountains rise between Sana'a and Hodeidah, a region of steep terraced slopes, coffee farms and fortified stone villages built on the peaks. Many of the villages date back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, when the region was a stronghold of the Sulayhids. The town of Manakha is the usual base for walks between villages such as al-Hajjarah and al-Hutaib, with views across the clouds to the Tihama.
