Ahmad ibn Alwan (d. 665 AH) was one of the best-loved scholars and Sufis of Yemen, remembered for his poetry, his sermons and his books on spiritual counsel. He lived and taught at Yafrus in Jabal Habashi, south-west of Taiz, and is still known as the master of Yafrus. His grave lies within the white-domed mosque complex at Yafrus, which grew around it over the centuries and became one of the main places of visitation in the Taiz region. The mosque stands among the old stone houses of the village, surrounded by the terraced mountains of Jabal Habashi.
