Al-Ashrafiyya Mosque and Madrasa is the finest Rasulid building in Yemen, a royal mosque, school and burial place completed around 800 AH by Sultan al-Ashraf Isma'il ibn al-Abbas, after whom it is named. Several Rasulid sultans and members of their family are buried in it. The mosque has twin white minarets and domes whose interiors are covered with painted and gilded decoration and calligraphy, which has been carefully restored. It stands in the old city of Taiz at the foot of Jabal Sabir, directly below al-Qahira Citadel.
