The Great Mosque of Ma'arrat al-Nu'man stands in the old heart of the town, on a site that was a temple and then a church before it became a mosque after the Muslim conquest of Syria. It was rebuilt several times after fires and earthquakes, especially in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, and is known for its domes and its fine square minaret. The mosque has been under restoration in recent years. The town is close to the tomb of the Umayyad caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz.
