The Apamea Museum occupies an Ottoman caravanserai of the sixteenth century at the foot of Qal'at al-Mudiq, built as a station for travellers and pilgrims on the road through the Orontes valley. Its arcaded courtyard and vaulted halls are a fine example of an Ottoman roadside khan. Today it houses one of the richest collections of mosaics in Syria, found in the ancient city of Apamea next door, together with inscriptions and other finds.
