About Watchtower of Bethlehem

The Tower of Bethlehem, located in the San Basilio quarter of Córdoba, is a small but remarkable remnant of the city’s Islamic fortifications. Built in the 12th century, it originally formed part of the defensive wall system constructed during the Almoravid–Almohad period to strengthen Córdoba’s western side. The tower is square in plan and preserves its original stone and brick construction, with a narrow entrance and vaulted interior. After the Christian conquest in 1236, it was repurposed and later took on the name “Belén” (“Bethlehem”), possibly linked to its proximity to a chapel or nativity shrine established in the area. Today, the tower is one of the few surviving Islamic watchtowers of Córdoba, offering a vivid reminder of the city’s medieval fortifications. Standing quietly within the neighbourhood streets of San Basilio, it illustrates the defensive architecture of al-Andalus, where towers and walls protected the bustling life of the caliphal capital.
