About Gate of Seville (Bab al-Ishbiliya)

Bab al-Ishbiliya (Gate of Seville), was one of the principal entrances into Umayyad Córdoba. Located close to the souk (Arab market), it was a key access point for merchants and travellers arriving from the west along the road to Seville. Its strategic position made it both a commercial gateway and part of the city’s defensive system. The original Islamic gate no longer survives in its historic location. Today, the reconstructed Puerta de Sevilla stands in the Plaza de la Luna, serving as a symbolic reminder of the former Bab Ishbiliya and its importance in the life of the caliphal capital. This gate reflects how Córdoba’s urban defences and trade routes were intertwined, with monumental gateways controlling the flow of goods and people into the medina. Though displaced from its original setting, the Puerta de Sevilla remains a visible echo of the city’s Islamic fortifications and bustling marketplace culture.
