After the Battle of Hunayn and the siege of Taif in 8 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ returned to al-Ji'ranah, where the captives and spoils of Hunayn had been gathered. He stayed here for some days sharing out the spoils, giving generously to the new Muslims of Makkah to win their hearts, and he reassured the Ansar, who were deeply moved by his words to them. Before leaving he entered ihram here at night and performed Umrah. The mosque, with the old well beside it from which the Prophet ﷺ is said to have drunk, lies about twenty-five kilometres north-east of Makkah. Al-Ji'ranah is still used as a miqat point by people in Makkah who wish to enter ihram for Umrah, and the mosque has been rebuilt with facilities for pilgrims.
