Dumat al-Jandal

The Mosque of Umar in Dumat al-Jandal is attributed to the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, when this oasis on the road to Iraq and Syria became part of the Muslim lands. It is often described as one of the oldest mosques in Arabia still standing on its original plan. Its most striking feature is the tall stone minaret, built from the local stone and tapering towards the top, which is thought to be among the earliest minarets in Islam. The mosque stands in the historic quarter of Dumat al-Jandal beside Marid Castle, has been restored, and is still used for prayer.
