In his years in Madinah, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ prayed the two Eid prayers on an open prayer ground (musalla) a short walk south-west of his mosque. This is the place traditionally identified as that musalla, and he is also said to have prayed the prayer for rain here. The name al-Ghamamah, meaning the cloud, comes from the tradition that a cloud shaded him while he prayed. The present building, with its grey basalt walls and cluster of white domes, dates from the Ottoman period, with later restorations. It stands in the open square south-west of Masjid al-Nabawi beside the mosques named after Abu Bakr, Umar and Sayyiduna Ali, and is one of the easiest historic sites to visit on foot from the Haram. It is opened only at limited times.
