Uthman ibn Affan, the third caliph, was among the first to accept Islam and was married in turn to Sayyida Ruqayyah and Sayyida Umm Kulthum, daughters of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, which earned him the name Dhu al-Nurayn. He led the Muslims for twelve years, during which the Qur'an was gathered into the single copy sent out to the provinces, and he was martyred in his house in Madinah in 35 AH. He was buried at night in Hashsh Kawkab, then a garden beyond al-Baqi' that was later joined to the cemetery. His grave lies in the eastern part of al-Baqi', reached along the main path from the entrance, and like the other graves there it is level and unmarked.
