Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second caliph, passed away in 23 AH after ten years in which the Muslim community spread from Iraq to Egypt. Before his passing he asked Sayyidah A'ishah for permission to be buried beside his two companions, and she gave it. His grave lies next to that of Abu Bakr in the room beneath the Green Dome, within Masjid al-Nabawi. Visitors greet him last as they pass along the front of the chamber towards Bab al-Baqi'.
