Nabi Muhammad ﷺ passed away in 11 AH in the room of Sayyidah A'ishah, adjoining his mosque in Madinah, and was buried there. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab were later buried beside him in the same room, which was brought within Masjid al-Nabawi during the expansion of al-Walid I in the early eighth century. The chamber lies beneath the Green Dome on the south-east side of the mosque. A wooden dome was first built over it in 1279, later replaced in stone, and the present dome dates from 1817; it was first painted green in 1837. Visitors pass in front of the chamber to send salutations, entering from Bab al-Salam and leaving through Bab al-Baqi'.
