This old cemetery in Jeddah has long been associated with the grave of Sayyidah Hawwa, the mother of humanity, and the city's name is popularly linked with it, as Jiddah can mean grandmother. Travellers from medieval times onwards described a long tomb here that pilgrims would visit on their way to Makkah. The old tomb structure was removed in the twentieth century. The cemetery is still in use and is not always open to casual visitors, but it remains a well-known landmark in the history of Jeddah.
