Masjid al-Shafi'i is regarded as the oldest mosque in historic Jeddah, known as al-Balad. Tradition dates its foundation to the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, and it was rebuilt several times over the centuries, with its minaret among the oldest surviving structures in the old town. The mosque stands in the Harat al-Mazlum quarter of al-Balad, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, among the tall coral-stone houses with their wooden latticed windows. It was carefully restored in recent years and is still used for daily prayers.
