Sheikhupura Fort was built around 1607 under the emperor Jahangir, who entrusted the work to a local landlord, Sikandar Muin. Sikh forces took it in 1808, and in 1811 Maharaja Ranjit Singh granted it to his wife Datar Kaur, who lived here until 1838 and added new buildings. Jind Kaur, mother of Duleep Singh, was later held here. The fort is roughly square, with high brick walls, octagonal corner bastions and its main gate to the east. Inside are Sikh-period havelis decorated with frescoes. It has been under restoration in recent years, and Hiran Minar is a short drive to the west.
