This is the shrine of Waris Shah, the Punjabi Sufi poet whose Heer, written in 1766, is the most celebrated telling of the romance of Heer and Ranjha. He was born in Jandiala Sher Khan in 1722 and is buried in his home town. The brick shrine stands in lawns and gardens, its walls engraved with verses from Heer, and his annual urs draws large gatherings. Jandiala Sher Khan lies near Sheikhupura, about 50 kilometres north-west of Lahore, and the old baoli and mosque of Sher Khan are close by.
