Government Islamia College on Railway Road was founded in 1892 by the Anjuman Himayat-i-Islam, the Muslim educational society of Lahore established in 1884. It became one of the leading Muslim colleges of the Punjab. The Anjuman's annual gatherings were among the great literary occasions of Lahore, and Muhammad Iqbal recited several of his best-known poems at them. The college's white main building with its domed turrets faces a large playing ground.
