Alhamra Arts Council on the Mall is Lahore's main centre for theatre, music and the arts. The arts council was set up after independence, and its present complex of red-brick halls and galleries was designed by the architect Nayyar Ali Dada. The complex holds theatres, art galleries, music and dance classes and literary festivals, and it hosts the city's major concerts and stage plays. Its brick architecture is itself regarded as one of the landmarks of modern Lahore.
