Al-Khidr, the righteous servant of God whose journey with Nabi Musa is told in the Qur'an, is honoured at many places in Iraq, most of them beside rivers and waterways, and this small maqam in the al-Rayyan area north of Basra city is one of them. It is a maqam, a place associated with him, and people of the district come here to pray and to seek blessings. The maqam is a modest, well-kept building on a side street, used for daily prayers, classes in reading and memorising the Qur'an, and gatherings on religious occasions. It lies a few kilometres north of the city centre, between Basra and al-Hartha.
