This shrine in the Ashar district is honoured as the grave of Sayyid Abdullah ibn Ali ibn Ja'far, a descendant of Imam Ali al-Hadi, the tenth of the Imams of the Prophet's ﷺ family, through his son Ja'far. Known simply to Basrawis as the shrine of Abdullah ibn Ali, it is one of the most visited shrines in the centre of the city, and the street on which it stands carries his name. The shrine sits among the busy markets of Ashar, the old river port of Basra, and is open daily from early morning until the evening for visitors who come to greet him and pray. The Maqam of Ali al-Rida, the al-Mallak mosque and the Shatt al-Arab Corniche are all a few minutes' walk away.
