Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Amri was a trusted companion of Imam Ali al-Hadi and Imam al-Hasan al-Askari, and in Shia tradition the first of the four deputies (sufara') of Imam al-Mahdi during the Minor Occultation. He handled the affairs of the community on the Imams' behalf from Baghdad. His shrine is in the old Maydan quarter of Rusafa, close to the Muradiya and Ahmadiya mosques and the Iraq National Library. The shrines of the three deputies who followed him, his son Muhammad ibn Uthman, Husayn ibn Ruh al-Nawbakhti and Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samari, are also in old Baghdad.
