Bayt al-Hikma today is a research foundation named after the House of Wisdom of the Abbasid caliphs, the academy and library where scholars translated Greek, Persian and Indian works into Arabic in the 9th century. It promotes study and publishing in the humanities and sciences. The foundation occupies a historic riverside building near Maydan Square in old Rusafa, beside the Abbasid Palace and close to the Iraq National Library.
