Al-Musta'sim Billah was the last Abbasid caliph of Baghdad, ruling from 640 to 656 AH (1242–1258). He was killed when the Mongol army of Hulagu took the city in 656 AH, an event that brought the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad to an end. His tomb is in a mosque in al-A'zamiyya that began as a shrine over the grave of Ahmad al-Sabti, the ascetic son of Harun al-Rashid. A tombstone identified as the caliph's was found here in excavations in 1993. The mosque also holds the grave of Rabi'a, said to be his daughter or granddaughter, which is why it was long known as the Abu Rabi'a mosque. The present building dates from a rebuilding in 2005.
