About Al-Najada Mosque

Al-Najada is one of the oldest mosques of al-Zubayr, founded in 1003 AH (1594) by the town's settlers from Najd, after whom it is named. Al-Zubayr grew up around the grave of the Companion al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, and the families who came from Najd made it one of the principal towns of the region; this mosque was among the first they built, and its qibla was laid out in the year of its founding. According to the local historian Yusuf al-Bassam, the present building was rebuilt at the expense of Shaykh Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, and the mosque remains in daily use. It stands about 270 m north of the al-Zubayr mosque, which holds the graves of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam and Utba ibn Ghazwan, and the old al-Khashirm mosque is close by.
