Talha ibn Ubaydullah of Quraysh was one of the first people to accept Islam, brought to it by Abu Bakr, and one of the ten promised Paradise. At Uhud he stayed beside the Prophet ﷺ when the line broke and shielded him, taking an arrow on his hand and many wounds, and the Prophet ﷺ called him Talha al-Fayyad, the Generous, for his open-handedness. He was one of the six Umar named to choose the next caliph, and he fell at the Battle of the Camel near Basra in 36 AH and was buried here. The shrine stands in al-Zubayr, about 650 m east of the Khutwa mosque of Sayyiduna Ali, and has been under restoration in recent years. The al-Zubayr mosque, with the graves of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam and Utba ibn Ghazwan, is about 3 km to the west, close to the grave of Hasan al-Basri.
