This old mosque of al-Zubayr was founded in 1162 AH (1748) by Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Khashirm, from one of the town's families of Najdi origin. It is also called the Darwaz mosque, and most commonly the al-Hunayf mosque, after the family who served as its imams, preachers and muezzins for many years. The mosque is still in daily use for prayers and lessons. It stands in the old centre of al-Zubayr, about 370 m from the al-Zubayr mosque with the graves of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam and Utba ibn Ghazwan, and close to the al-Najada mosque.
