The al-Mallak mosque is one of the historic mosques of Basra, built in 1868 by Hajj Hammud Pasha al-Mallak in the heart of the Ashar district, at the start of Kuwait Street. It holds the Friday and Eid prayers and gatherings through the year, especially in the month of Muharram. It stands among the shops of Ashar, close to the gold market, and the Maqam of Ali al-Rida and the shrine of Abdullah ibn Ali ibn Ja'far are each about 300 m away. The Shatt al-Arab Corniche is a short walk east.
