The takiyya of Sultan Mahmud was built in 1750 in the name of the Ottoman sultan Mahmud I, with a takiyya for Sufis and students, a sabil and a kuttab. It was the first sabil built in Cairo in the name of an Ottoman sultan. The sabil has a curved front with large windows and a wide wooden canopy, and the takiyya behind it is set around a courtyard with arcades. It stands on Port Said Street in al-Habbaniyya, a short walk from the Museum of Islamic Art.
