The mosque of Qawsun was first built in 1329 and 1330 by the amir Qawsun, one of the most powerful men at the court of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad. Most of the old mosque was taken down when the modern street was cut through the area, and a new mosque was built on the site in the 1890s under Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, so many locals know it by his name. The original stone gateway of the Mamluk mosque still survives, and the rebuilt prayer hall has a high painted ceiling. It is an active neighbourhood mosque in Darb al-Ahmar, between Muhammad Ali Street and the Sultan Hasan Mosque.
