The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization opened in 2021 in Fustat, overlooking the lake of Ain al-Sira. It tells the story of Egypt from prehistory to the present day, including its Coptic and Islamic periods. Its central hall displays objects from every era, and the royal mummies of ancient Egypt, moved here from the Egyptian Museum, are shown in a gallery below. It stands a short walk from the mosque of Amr ibn al-As and the old city of Fustat.
