The madrasa of Jawhar al-Lala was built in 1429 and 1430 by the amir Jawhar, tutor to the sons of Sultan Barsbay, which gave him the title al-Lala. He later managed the sultan's household. The small madrasa has a stone dome and a minaret, and it stands on a raised site overlooking Salah al-Din Square at the entrance to Darb al-Labbana. It has been under restoration in recent years.
