The madrasa of Sultan al-Ashraf Barsbay was built in 1424 on the main street of the old city, at the corner of the spice market. It served as a mosque, a madrasa and a khanqah, and his wife and son are buried in its domed tomb. Inside are fine marble floors, an inlaid minbar and a painted wooden ceiling. It stands on al-Muizz Street, a few steps north of al-Azhar Street.
