The wikala of al-Ghuri was built in 1504 to 1505 by Sultan al-Ghuri as an inn and warehouse for merchants, with storerooms on the lower floors and lodgings above. It is one of the best-preserved caravanserais of Cairo. Its courtyard is surrounded by four storeys of rooms and wooden screens, and it is now a cultural centre for crafts and the arts. It stands behind al-Azhar, a short walk from the Ghuri complex.
