The Kamiliyya madrasa was founded in 1225 by the Ayyubid sultan al-Kamil as a school of hadith, the second built for that purpose anywhere in the Muslim world. Many of the great hadith scholars of Cairo taught or studied there. Little of the original building survives, and a later mosque stands on the site on al-Muizz Street, opposite the Qalawun complex.
