Hosh al-Basha is the burial ground of the family of Muhammad Ali Pasha, built in the early nineteenth century beside the grave of Imam al-Shafi'i. Many members of his family are buried here, though Muhammad Ali himself lies in his mosque in the Citadel. The tombs are carved in white marble with painted and gilded inscriptions, under domes richly decorated inside. It has been restored in recent years and stands next to the shrine of Imam al-Shafi'i.
