Shaykh al-Islam Zakariyya al-Ansari lived more than a hundred years, from 823 to 926 AH, and served as chief judge of Egypt while writing works on Shafi'i law and Sufism. His student al-Sha'rani said that by the end of his life there was hardly a scholar in Egypt who had not studied with him. He is buried beside the dome of Imam al-Shafi'i in the Qarafa.
