Umm Kulthum grew up in a village in the Nile Delta, learned the Qur'an as a child and began by singing religious songs with her father before becoming the most celebrated singer of the Arab world. Her monthly concerts were broadcast across the region for decades, and huge crowds followed her funeral in Cairo when she passed away in 1975. Her tomb is in the Southern Cemetery between Imam al-Shafi'i and al-Muqattam, a short walk from the tomb of Mahmud Shaltut.
