Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Ma'afiri al-Shatibi (585–672 AH) was a jurist and teacher of the Qur'an from Xativa in al-Andalus who settled in Alexandria. The Shatby district is named after him. He is a different scholar from al-Qasim al-Shatibi, the author of the famous poem on the readings of the Qur'an, who is buried in Cairo. His mosque stands near the Corniche in Shatby, close to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and his tomb lies inside under a carved cenotaph.
